The Pirate101 Classes

Introduction

Pirate101 has 5 different classes, each one having different pros and cons, and different play-styles. These classes consist of the tough Buccaneers, the sharp-shooting Musketeers, the supporting Privateers, the nimble Swashbucklers, and the tricky Witchdoctors.

Type: Melee
Pros: High Health, High Armor, High Base Damage Many Epics, Charge Powers
Cons: Low Resist, Few Powers, Only One AOE Power

Buccaneers are one of the tanking classes of Pirate101. Their high health, and armor allow them to take a lot of damage from Melee attackers, and their epics allow them to deal the damage right back at them. Their charge powers allow them to get to the enemy very quickly, and start tanking so their companions don’t have to worry about getting hurt. However, they are very susceptible to Musketeers and Witchdoctors, who get around armor with their magical attacks, and because most Buccaneer Epics won’t trigger against them. Their lack of powers always means they rely on their accuracy more than the other classes, and they only have one AOE, Reckless Frenzy, which is received very late in game (Level 65). However, the amount of damage they can absorb from Melee attackers, and deal right back is staggering.

Type: Ranged
Pros: High Accuracy, Good Resist, Many AOE Attacks, Traps
Cons: Low Armor, Low Dodge, No strong single target power

Musketeers use their guns to attack from afar, away from their enemies. They use traps to damage, and ward off any enemies thinking about getting close. All of their naturally learned powers are in the form of an AOE of a sort; some attacking in a straight line, some in x, some in +, and some in a 3x3 square. This allows them to easily weaken a group of enemies. However, if a Melee enemy were to get close to them, they can be easily taken out. They also have no strong one-target power, which means they can't focus on a single enemy very well.

Type: Mixed
Pros: Good Mix of Health/Armor/Resist, Heals, Buffs
Cons: Very few attack powers, Dependent on Companions

Privateers improve their allies with buffs, and keep them alive with their heals. They only have a few attacks, which are AOEs, and are ranged. Since they have so few attacks, they rely on their companions, and other pirates and their companions to deal damage. Stat-wise, they have a good mix of most stats. The reason why they are a “mixed” class, is that they can play both melee, and/or ranged. While their naturally learned powers are ranged powers, their armor allows them to take damage, similar to a Buccaneer. This lets their companions focus more on attacking the enemies, instead of trying to survive. However, if a companion does end up dying, the fight will get much harder, due to the big decrease in damage.

Type: Melee
Pros: High Dodge, High Damage,
Cons: Low Resist, Can be Fragile

Swashbucklers attack quick, and fast. They have the highest base movement, which allows them to get to enemies quickly, or maybe even run away, if needed. They can hide, using powers like Walk of Shadows, which protects them from most attacks (Any attack, except AOEs) which also boost the strength of their next attack. They have poisons, which deal DOT damage to multiple enemies, and strong single target attacks. They even have 2 AOE powers, Dance of Steel, and Gambit of Steel. While they may not have the best Health/Armor/Resist, they have great dodge, which means low-accuracy enemies will have a tough time hurting them. That’s why they need to be careful of Musketeers, since their accuracy will help them counter that dodge.

Type: Ranged
Pros: High Resist, Large Variety of Powers
Cons: Lacking in most stats

Witchdoctors, while lacking in most stats, have a great multitude of powers, which make up for it. They have AOEs, DOTs, Minions, and a variety of other tricks up their sleeves. Mojo Blade/Reaver will make any enemy be weary of getting close to a Witchdoctor, since they deal great damage, and ignore Armor, and instead are defended by Will. Witchdoctors also have the ability to teleport into any open square on the board with Shadow Step; great for offense, or defense. They still need to be weary of Melee enemies, however, because if they don’t have Mojo Blade/Reaver, or Shadow step, then they can be defeated rather easily.

Conclusion

Every class is very unique, and can various different things to the table, as you can clearly see. If you beat the game with one class, try playing as another class and your experience will be much different. . Playing as one class can be fun, but playing with multiple is much more fun!
